Tooling Design Developments

COSM6

The last few years have seen significant investment in our tooling design process and manufacturing technology. Although the tooling produced today is increasingly complex to meet the demands for fast cycle times and rigorous quality standards, modern methods mean that lead times are reduced to a minimum.

The main areas of tooling development have been in mould designs which allow greater control of the casting process and in group handling components for processing speciality battery types such as AGM, gel and traction.

Developments in Mould technology:

  • Latest mould designs include an improved feed-pipe system which allows faster more even lead filling.
  • Water-cooled post inserts are available for COS8 moulds where large volume terminal posts require additional cooling to avoid porosity.
  • New moulds for side terminal batteries have been developed to improve cast quality and reduce cycle times.
  • Small 3x2 sealed batteries can now be processed on a new COS5 mould design.
  • An entirely new concept has been developed for small sealed or motorcycle batteries processed on the COS7. The mould block actually supplies the heat energy necessary for fusion before rapidly cooling the straps after casting.

SpeedShift Assembly line tooling:
Speedshift assembly line machines use new tooling specially designed for automatic changeover. For example, battery lid holder tooling and melt-platen on the new Speedshift LS6 Lid-sealing machine can all be changed at the press of a button without tools or manual set-up.
